Black History Moment: Today in 1993 Jocelyn Elders is appointed the 1st Black U.S. Surgeon General. In January 1993, Bill Clinton appointed her. She was the 2nd woman (following Antonia Novello) to hold the position. She quickly established a reputation for controversy & was an outspoken advocate of a variety of health-related causes. She argued for an exploration of the possibility of drug legalization and backed the distribution of contraceptives in schools.
