Blade Show stories continued: I had a table at my first Blade Show when I was 14 years old. My dad had to drive me of course and was always extremely supportive in helping with shows. (He was also my sheath maker) Back then the show was in Knoxville and the tables were a whopping $50! I took about 15 knives and sold most of them. I dont remember much about the show except some of the important relationships that were born that weekend. People were generally not as forthcoming about how-to information in the knifeworld back then but there were several gentlemen that went out of their way to answer my many questions. I talked heat treat with Dan Maragni, damascus with Steve Schwarzer, etching and design with Hugh Bartaugh and poor Charlie Ochs had his table right behind me so he easily suffered through 1,000 questions. Jim Batson helped me with pricing. Ever since I have looked at the show as a valuable time to pick brains and learn. Now I go armed with questions in advance with a small list of makers to ask. One would be hard pressed to find such a concentration of talent and skill in any other place.
