Blairs Future Problem-Solving Team The Blair High and Middle School’s Future Problem Solving Program teams are deep in preparation for their competition to qualify for the annual California Future Problem Solving (CAFPS) State Bowl. This week word has arrived that CAFPS has been featured as an “Expert Pick” resource for gifted and talented children on the Stanford University website. In Future Problem Solving, teams of four must read a futuristic scenario, discover 16 problems within that scenario, define an underlying problem, create 16 possible solutions to that underlying problem, develop 5 criteria for evaluating the solutions, evaluate them and then write out the final solution in essay form. All of this must be accomplished in two uninterrupted hours. Blair has a long tradition of FPS teams. This year they host four in the Senior (grades 10-12) and Middle (grades 6-9) Divisions. The school traditionally has at least one team, and sometimes more, qualify for the State Bowl almost every year. Blair is currently the only PUSD school sporting Future Problem Solving teams, as well as the only public school in Los Angeles County.
