Blasphemy laws are a species of law that seek to protect the perceived integrity of imagined gods, by infringing upon the rights of real human beings. Blasphemy laws are hangovers from a darker age and they are enjoying somewhat of a renaissance in recent times. The Saudi Arabian blogger, Raif Badawi, is presently serving time in prison for blasphemy and in Pakistan, following their protesting of the illegal detention of one of their colleagues, 68 lawyers have been charged with blasphemy, an offence that carries the death penalty. At present there are 13 countries around the world that issue the death penalty for atheism and many others that, by way of this capricious species of law, imprison atheists for being, well, sane. Atheist Author, Michael Sherlock has formed an organization called, ‘Human rights for Atheists Agnostics and Secularists’ which is seeking, by way of a petition, to appeal to the United Nations, to amend both the Charter and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to include freedom from religion and thereby render blasphemy laws, illegal. Join Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, Ricky Gervais and many others in signing and supporting the petition to abolish blasphemy laws:
