Blaze Spikers maintain fifth place finish after sweeping Cagayan Valley The Petron Blaze Spikers had their second fifth place finish at the Philippine SuperLiga after they swept the Cagayan Valley Rising Suns in straight sets, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23, in the battle for fifth at the Cuneta Astrodome on July 23. Top draft pick Dindin Santiago showed the form she started with at the PSL All-Filipino Conference, concluding with 30 points on 21 attacks, six blocks, and three service aces. Carmina Aganon also contributed nine points for the Blaze Spikers. “Yung nangyari sa amin (may mga) na hindi inaasahan,” Petron coach George Pascua pertained to their conference. “Nagkaroon ng injury ang mga players namin (and) yung momentum naputol.” Petron showed more fight in the match as it scored more from blocks (9-4) and aces (7-1), a performance that it hopes to bring to the next conference. “Very young yung team ngayon, hindi pa ganon ka-matured,” Pascua shared. Coach Nes Pamilar’s birthday party will be a lot more somber as the Rising Suns had their worst finish at the PSL at sixth place. Their brief flashes of brilliance were not enough to make up for what was a lackadaisical effort in their last match of the conference. Janine Marciano and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas were the only bright spots for Cagayan, joining hands to produce 31 points, just one more than Santiago. (JP Abcede)
