Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. . . .” (Matthew 5:6; NIV). Righteousness—that’s the deepest thirst I long to have quenched. Not a thirst for popularity, possessions or passions. They are but saltwater in the desert. They’ve never quenched the yearning in the depths. No, I’m thirsty for a clean conscience, a clean slate, a fresh start. I need a living water that will find its way to the darkest cavern of my life and do the one thing I can never do for myself—make me right. “Create in me a pure heart, God, and make my spirit right again” (Psalm 51:10; NCV).
