Bling in the Show Ring: When is too much enough? I was at a show the other day, and a little girl walked by leading her calf. Normally I would evaluate her calf, but her outfit which looked like NASA space suit collides with Grand Old Opry rhinestone cowboy suit stopped me in my tracks. She was wearing a tie dyed, sequin covered shirt made from some kind of slinky, shiny material. The shirt also had Swarovski crystals on the sleeves, collar, and around the yolk. The shirt was too subtle so she decided to add a belt so bedecked with bling that no leather was visible. The blingiest jeans Miss Me makes and zebra print boots completed the ensemble. I was shocked all the way to my Southern roots, and my first thought was, Lord have mercy! What is that child wearing?! That thought was followed by, How could her mother let her out of the house wearing that, bless her heart. Next I was thankful that I hadnt been drinking the night before the show. The combination of a hangover and that outfit on a sunny morning would likely be deadly. I still have no idea what the girls calf looked like. I would not have even been able to tell anyone the color of the calf. The whole point of the story is her outfit was so distracting that someone who studies each calf didnt even notice the calf. The judge probably had the same problem. I love bling, but minimize the bling when youre headed to the show ring! Keep these 5 things in mind when youre planning your show day outfit. 1. You are going to a stock show not a fashion show. The focus is on the animal not you. 2. Coordinate your colors to compliment not compete with your animal. Stick to the basics, solids, stripes, or plaids. 3. Dress for success. If youre dressed professionally, youre going to command more respect in the ring. 4. Ladies, its okay to spice up your outfit with some tasteful jewelry or a belt. Statement necklaces can add a classy, feminine touch. 5. Just a hint of bling is not a bad thing, but you dont want to outshine the animal you are presenting.
