Blog-Rant Over the last 10 years I have noticed that houses are still flying up and people are shouting ‘TAKE MY MONEY’ and moving in to small house cells with small outside areas that they advertise as ‘Gardens’ on the looses term. Wikipedia the reference library we All defines: A garden is a planned space, usually outdoors, set aside for the display, cultivation, and enjoyment of plants and other forms of nature. 12x12ft space with 4 slabs and a tree must be OK then. (What happens in 20 years when the tree is the size of the garden and the roots have decided to play Jenga with your house?) For the last 30 years most of the houses they have built are Crap houses that barely scrape through the minimum standards look how the rest of Europe live! They give you a small outside area that a bloody rabbit would think it had done some serious crime and put in death row! (I once had a friend who thought roundabout rabbits were serving hard time that’s why they got sent there) What is upsetting is we have created fantastic things in the last 30 years and these could be built into the houses at concept like solar panels, grey water storage and recycling, thermal heat pumps, bore holes and the hyper efficient burners. A step back in time! In 1976 my step father, a man I greatly respect both for bringing me up and for planting the seed on innovation. He made a genius invention he redirected the water from the bath and upstairs sink into a large water barrel and then this was feed via a garden hose with small holes in it around the garden (50x30ft) buried just under the top of the soil and grass, thus watering the plants, grass and small vegetable patch slowly and without waste. We had without doubt the greenest most beautiful garden in the street and even the UK that year? All the vegetables tasted of soap from the bath water, though it did make my mothers cooking to bearable! So I suppose what I am trying to get across is with all these great, smart, genius ideas and the government giving £40million a year to companies to help reduce the carbon footprint (in my opinion not enough and way too difficult paperwork to navigate to benefit most people) why are these builders using building techniques and materials and building QBC (Quick Build Crap my step father called them) when we know that houses should be built for the future. 1 million people are building or have built their own homes in the last few years, you see all the dramas on the TV of them during the build, but the bit we all love is the money-shot! The massive Smiles and adventure they had and the amazing home they have built themselves. Will these still be standing in 100-200 years time? I got a good feeling they will. Here come the Rant! We have smart phones, smart TV’s and smart cars. We even have hoverboards coming out this year, self tying shoes and filters that make any water drinkable, we have people making videos showing you how to make £50 solarwater heaters and rocket mass heaters which warm your house with a handful of sticks and no smoke. We live in an age of communication where we can look up something if we do not understand it. (I do it everyday) We should be looking to the future securing it for our future generations. Take a farmer 500 years ago (they did not live long in those days 30-50 tops) deciding to section his land up buy planting hedgerows, so by the time they became good fences his son or daughter was running the farm. They planned long term, in fact they planned for their grand children as they wanted to leave a heritage, and they bloody well did a good job. I often think what will I leave behind? A shitty 3 bedroom house with a garden barely the size of a prison cell, with a 99 year lease to some corporation run by a psychopath. (read the psychopath test and you will see these people everywhere) It is our planet and it is being trashed like a village green by a caravan of pikeys!
