Blooming This Week (2nd week of May, 2014): Stylophorum diphyllum (Celandine Woodland Poppy) Woodland or Celandine Poppy is native to moist woodlands and streambanks of the southern United States but is fully hardy here in Wisconsin. It bears showy bright yellow four petaled poppy-like flowers in late spring and early summer atop 15-18 stems. The lobed grey-green foliage stays attractive all year in moist conditions and occasionally will produce a second crop of flowers in late summer. Given ideal growing conditions Stylophorum will seed happily, but not offensively. Unfortunately, when not in bloom, this beautiful native bears an uncanny resemblance to its weedy Eurasian cousin (Chelidonium majus) which produces insignificant yellow flowers and seeds prolifically enough to be considered an aggressive invasive species.
