Blues Foundation Board Seeks Nominations for the Board of Directors The Blues Foundation is currently seeking qualified candidates for nomination to the Board of Directors. The nominating process opens on May 29, 2014 and ends at midnight on June 13, 2014. Upon joining The Blues Foundation, all members are asked to identify themselves with a constituency group, who then elect their board representatives in one of eight blues music related constituencies. We welcome nominees in three blues related constituency categories to begin 3-year terms of board service in the fall of 2014. The following constituent candidates will be voted on by Blues Foundation members in their respective categories: • Blues Recording Labels, Studios, Publishers, & Retailers • Blues Educator & Educational Institutions • Blues Fans In addition to the three Board constituency seats, there are 6 openings for Board positions to be filled by the vote of the existing Board. Like any charitable arts organization, The Blues Foundation asks board members for some combination of time, talent, and financial support. Board members are expected to make a financial commitment to one of our programs, to identify their interests and preferences for advancing the foundations goals, and to abide by the Code of Conduct, which outlines ethical commitments board members make to the foundation and to each other. The Blues Foundation adopted a Strategic Plan in 2013. All board members are engaged on at least one committee, which typically meets by phone and works in cooperation with the staff. The major committees are Membership & Affiliates, Marketing & Communication, Fundraising, Constituency Relations, Generation Blues (Education), The Hart Fund (healthcare), Finance, and Governance. More information on board activity will be provided to nominated candidates once their applications are complete. The Blues Foundation board meets 4 times a year. The January and May meetings are in Memphis and coincide with the International Blues Challenge and the Blues Music Awards. The summer meeting is via teleconference. The fall meeting rotates among major cities outside of Memphis. Board members represent a broad demographic of blues fans, the blues industry, educators and musicians, and we value the power of working together at board meetings. Blues Foundation board membership requires service and an investment: all board members are expected to personally attend board meetings. We understand and appreciate that this is a significant financial commitment, but it is a prerequisite for joining the Blues Foundation Board. All board nominees must be Blues Foundation members and secure nominations from 3 existing Blues Foundation members. A member may nominate themselves, but they still need the support of 2 Blues Foundation members. Nominations for a constituency seat must come from members of that constituency group, and the board candidate must be a member of that constituency. To be considered, all candidates must email a jpeg photo, 200 word biography, the names of nominating members, and brief answers to the questions below, by June 13, 2014. That provides candidates with a full two weeks to complete the nomination process. 1. What unique traits or talents do you offer that will benefit the Blues Foundation? 2. What is your connection to blues music and blues music community? 3. What personal commitments should the Foundation expect from you? 4. As you think about your role as a Blues Foundation board member, what area do you think you will be most active? 5. What expectations do you have of the staff and management of The Blues Foundation? 6. What are your personal dreams or aspirations in regards to “keeping the blues alive” that will enhance your service on this board? Once a nomination has been successfully submitted, the Board Development Committee will evaluate the submission. Candidates who are invited to proceed in the nomination process will be contacted by a Committee member to discuss their backgrounds, blues connections, and the level of their commitment for advancing the work of The Blues Foundation. If you have any questions, please contact the Blues Foundation President and CEO, Jay Sieleman, at 901-527-2583. Please return your nomination information to [email protected].
