Bob Purvey Sorry to learn about the passing of Mr. Ault. Im sure his family and friends will miss him much. From this picture he looks like he was a kind, thoughtful and healthy guy who may have thought he was invincible and the waves too alluring to avoid. Since 1992, Ive been learning about the harsh reality of what lies hidden in the water, waiting to kill or at least make our lives a terribly excruciating experience with illnesses that are costly. Ive tried sharing the best management practices of not entering the water for three days after the first rain of the season and then any following rains for at least 500 feet away from where storm drains into the ocean at surf zones. Yet, even now that alerts are noticed everywhere, surfers ignore the signs. I went to third point at Malibu Surfrider a day after the storm and asked a couple, guy and gal who just got out of the water, if they were aware of the notices. The gal just shunned me as though I was trying to ruin their day and the guy indicated that there is a trade-off in any case. Their excuse was simply serving to justify their ignorant choice to surf despite the warnings. You know, Ive produced numerous documentaries about the situation here at Surfrider and faced off with numerous people laughing at me and calling me a chicken with its head cut off many times over the past 23 years and it still daunts me that surfers think they are invincible. I totally understand the allure of big waves from a storm and the excitement it builds. I remember when I was young and we only had heavyweight tops of divers wetsuits to wear and going into freezing water to catch those waves. Now I realize how lucky I was to escape those illnesses for so many years. It’s just pure luck and stupidity for what? Catching a big wave that is one of millions upon millions that reach the shore time and time again? To let three days pass without a wave is truly worth a life time...isnt it? Ask those that have died why they took the chance and didn’t get lucky and maybe you’ll think to do something else instead, like ride your bike, skiing, and hiking, join your friends for an exchange of fun stories over a drink breakfast or lunch and live life to the fullest. abcnews.go/Health/california-surfer-dies-staph-infection/story?id=28028208
