Bobs Corner The Story Continues ! (from the Northern Argus, Clare, April 14th.1891, courtesy of TROVE) “Whenever the fancy strikes him, Bob jumps onto a locomotive, and away he goes until he reaches a place that he likes, where he will stop for a day or two. Every engine driver in South Australia, Victoria and new South Wales knows or has heard of him, and, if not he carries his introduction around his neck in the shape of a brass inscription on his collar setting forth his name and who he is. A driver feels flattered when his engine is honoured by Bob’s presence and he and the fireman would go without their dinner than see their visitor go want. As a consequence, Bob is as plump as the proverbial alderman, and everywhere he goes he is feasted up until he gets so much flattery and attention and flies away to some new place. Bob has recently been up the South Australian Transcontinental line and was on his way back again, when having heard a lot about Broken Hill, he thought he would give the place a call, and consequently, he came up Tuesday morning. Bob immediately went in for sightseeing and among other places, he visited the Broken Hill Club where he was placed on the books as an Honorary Member. Thursday morning he apparently made up his mind that there was nothing further to keep him here, and he boarded an engine going Silverton wards, but getting as far as the goods shed on Railway Terrace he repented and came back again.” TO BE CONTINUED From Heather Paker
