Boca Bearings presents one of this year’s Innovation Contest entries! BuildersBot The creator’s reason for building the machine was because he needed a CNC and a 3D printer to develop one of his other projects. So instead of buying two machines, he decided to build one machine that could do both CNC milling and 3D printing. The 3D printing part is great for big objects, and eventually for applying new extruders that can extrude new materials (foods, metal, etc.). In the future, its creator intends to attach a laser diode on the machine to allow for laser cutting and engraving. The BuildersBot is an Arduino Controlled CNC Router and 3D printer. The BuildersBot is an Open Design machine, that uses Open Software and Open Hardware. It is a product of open projects such as the RepRap, Arduino and Repetier. The Buildersbot uses 12 small ball bearings on the X and Y axis and a single ball-screw and nut on the Z axis. It also has 12 linear bearing pillow blocks. Though ambitious, Buildersbot is only one of many contenders in this year’s Innovation Contest.
