Bodoland People’s Front snaps ties with Congress : (Thursday June 26th, 2014) The Assam politics witnessed a major development as the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) today announced that it will part ways with its long time allay Congress. The BPF is in power in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) that runs the administration in four districts of Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD). It was under the previous BJP-led NDA government that BPF was formed in 2001 from the erstwhile Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT), under the leadership of the militant outfits former commander Hagrama Mohilary. The Bodos also got their second accord and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), guaranteed by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, under NDA rule. The entire exercise was the brainchild of then home minister and deputy prime minister L K Advani who is considered to be the architect of the present autonomous set-up in the Bodo heartland. But, in 2006, BPF emerged as the saviour of a minority Congress and both formed a coalition government in the state. Five years later, Congress won absolute majority, but chief minister Tarun Gogoi preferred to keep the alliance intact. The relationship between the two parties deteriorated after the 2012 ethnic riots between Bodos and Bengali-speaking Muslims in Bodo areas. It unraveled further after the 2014 killings of Bengali-speaking Muslims by Bodo militants. Courtesy: News Time Assam
