Boko Haram: CAN petitions Shettima over arrest of members The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Gwoza area council of Borno State, has petitioned Governor Kashim Shettima over what it described as arrest and illegal detention of five of its members by the Joint Task Force (JTF) over Boko Haram related offenses. In the petition which was dated August 9, 2013, and signed by coordinating secretary of the organization, Rev. Joel Ndirmbita, the group called for investigation into the matter. According to him, on July 30, some youths who are members of the civilian JTF arrested five of the association’s members, accusing them of being members of the sect. “All the five detained people listed in our petition, your Excellency, are Christians, and their track records are to the effect that; they have never been associated with any act of criminality and as such cannot be linked to Boko Haram sect. Sequel to our letter of July 31, 2013, intimating you about the purportedthreat to our lives and property, we wish to bring to the attention of your good office theabove subject matter for possible investigation and necessary action, should our claims be confirmed to be within the limitof the”, the petition said. Our correspondent reports that the petition was also copied the JTF commander, the statecommissioner of police and the director of State Security Services and Gwoza emirate council.
