Boko Haram Violence: Sect Unleashed Mayhem All Over The North The proscription order comes four years after the Boko Haram sect unleashed terror on the northern region of Nigeria. The sect which strongly opposes man-made laws and westernization was founded by Mohammed Yusuf in 2001, and seeks to establish Sharia Law in the country. The movement is divided into three factions. In 2011, Boko Haram was responsible for at least 450 killings in Nigeria. It was also reported that they had been responsible for over 620 deaths over the first 6 months of 2012 since its founding in 2001, the sect has been responsible for roughly 10,000 deaths. Numerous buildings including places of worship in Jos, Kaduna, Kogi, Bauchi, Kano, Adamawa, Gombe and Yobe have been bombed. Perhaps the most devastating structural damage was the April 2013 attack on Baga in Borno state where over 2000 houses were destroyed. The sect’s attacks on law enforcement officers reached its bloodiest climax with 55 policemen killed by the militants in Bama, a border town in Borno state. At least 15 soldiers and Airforce officers have lost their lives in clashes with the sect. However, the recent declaration of a state of emergency has sent Boko haram on the run, while the US government has also placed a bounty of 7 million dollars on the leader of the Sect Shekau
