Boko Haram threatens Jonathan’s govt— Braithwaite Human rights lawyer, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, has described the Boko Haram insurgency as a threat to President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration and the unity of the country. In an interview with our correspondent, the elder statesman said Nigerians should not expect that the intervention of world’s superpowers would automatically end terrorism in the country. He stated that the responsibility was still with the Nigerian government, as foreign experts would only advise the country on what to do. Braithwaite said, “It (insurgency) is a dangerous trend that is on the upward in Nigeria. Unless the government reorders its priorities, it is a phenomenon that can be catastrophic for the survival of the government at first.” While he expressed his doubts that foreign intervention on Boko Haram would not lead to the disintegration of the country or make the countries extend their stay in Nigeria, he said it would be wrong for a member nation of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation to deploy its military in another sovereign country. Braithwaite said, “Most of the times, all these outpouring of sympathies and offers of help are ephemeral and would soon die down. They will not go beyond the outpourings. “They will not put their military in Nigeria. It comes down to us. They may give aids in cash and intelligence; it will not go more than that. That is why it remains our problem. “They are also thinking of their economic interest. If by their concern for economic interests they helped to strengthen our security, the benefits will go back to them indirectly.” He asked Nigerians to consider the situation in the United Kingdom, where Scotland planned to hold a referendum to pull out of the union in September. He also called attention to Crimea’s efforts to pull out of Ukraine and the division in Sudan. “This is why everybody was happy with the idea of the confab. I pray to God that some overzealous officials would not by their overzealousness turn the confab into a disaster,” Braithwaite added.
