Bollore, Transporters To Clash Unless government moves in swiftly to remedy the situation, indigenous transporters and a French company, Bollore are set to clash over pending contract termination. According to impeccable sources, Bollore has vowed to cancel the contract on October 21 this year of local transporters who operate about three hundred trucks with white drivers and contractors as their possible replacement, a move that has generated sharp criticism from some circles. Bollore is under contract with London Mining Company to transport ore from the mining site to the sea port at Thofayiem in Port Loko district. In October last year, the company was forced to sub-contract local transporters because it never had the capacity to meet London Mining ore export demand. Before then, Bollore had defaulted severally. Threatened with possible suspension and contract termination, Bollore contracted local transporters in a bid to meet London Mining export target. Convinced in their resolve to promote the government’s Agenda for Prosperity and to fulfill their part of the agreement, the local transporters took heavy bank loans to procure more trucks and other equipment. But just as they had entered in to full gear of their operations, the French company in what many believe was a wicked effort to frustrate the indigenous transporters abruptly cut down the cost of transportation from US$6.22 to US$4.20. A local transporter confided in Global Times that the move was actually an attempt at terminating the contract. Still not satisfied with the cut, the French company has now informed local transporters that it intends to terminate contract with them. In their place, mostly white European drivers will now be brought in by the company to fill the void left by Sierra Leonean transporters, which many say will undermine government’s most trumpeted Local Content Policy drive. In all, about six hundred Sierra Leoneans will be directly affected by the termination.
