Bonus fact of the day: As scared of this as you may be of this sort of thing coming to your area, you cannot even imagine the terror it strikes into the hearts of the parents of compromised children. It brings your fears to an entirely new level when the reality is that HEALTHY kids are having a hard time fighting this off - but things that WONT kill your child are at a hugely greater risk of doing so to Leukodystrophy kids. For example - Brittanys Alexander Disease prevents her from gaining weight normally. The heavier she is, the healthier she is, and its easier to stay that way. AxD prevents Team Brittany from the ability to cough - so we have to be at heightened awareness under normal conditions for pneumonia because she is unable to clear her own airway. Other kids we know are already on ventilators and other equipment for just this reason, our kids lose their airways because of Leukodystrophy. So whether its THIS virus, or ANY virus and you know you are either exposed or arent feeling well, PLEASE be considerate and do NOT expose a Leukodystrophy kid in your life! If Mom and dad tell you to stay home rather than visit, and remind you to wash hands when you do come, we arent being rude....we are trying to prevent a tragedy! #TurnLeukodystrophyBlue for #LeukodystrophyAwareness !
