Book Introduction. “A Snowdrop in Salalah, The Full Circle” is the bittersweet, and (I hope) uproariously funny account of one naive young man’s journey during through a part of his Military and Fire Service careers. It describes in earthy, barrack- room detail, what he and his colleagues went through, during an unpublicized conflict in the Sultanate of Oman, and describes in irreverent and often ribald service terminology how they coped .It underscores the adaptability often required to survive when life threatening situations occur without warning, and demonstrates the serviceman’s ability to retain his sense of humour in spite of truly extreme circumstances. The book is designed to make the reader laugh but also to relate the full story of what can befall ex-service personnel following discharge. The story also takes the reader through a period of this man’s life when he became mentally unwell, having developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Severe Reactive Depression as a result of some of his experiences, and describes in vivid detail the anguish and distress he suffered. It concludes with him making a full recovery, and embarking on a career change into Mental Health nursing. Whilst the objective in writing the book is to amuse and entertain, it is also hoped to send out a clear message that even if one does become mentally ill, help and support are available, recovery can be made, and there is no shame in admitting you need help. The book is aimed predominantly at current and former service personnel and their families, but it is hope it can also be of assistance to anyone unfortunate enough to pass through circumstances beyond their control which have a negative impact upon their mental well being.
