Book of Acts Week 2: Acts 1:13- 26 The eleven remaining Apostles (Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alpheus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas, the son of James) returned to Jerusalem, to the upper room where they had been staying. They were all with one mind continually devoting themselves to prayer along with the women, including Mary, Jesus’ mother and his brothers. Peter stood up in the middle of them (about 120 people) and said, “Brethren the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. For he was counted among us and received his portion in this ministry.” [ps.69:25 and 109:8 see below*] Luke adds the story about Judas here, shown in parentheses, how this man/Judas acquired a field with the money and falling headlong he burst open and all his bowels gushed out and that place became known to all living in Jerusalem; so that the field is called in their own language Akel Dama, that is the field of blood. [Note: There is no discrepancy with Matt. 27:5-10. the priests, considering the bribe money paid to Judas to be his legal property, purchased the field in his name] Peter continues, “*for it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘Let his homestead be made desolate, and let no man dwell in it’ and, ‘his office let another man take.’” Peter said they should consider men who had been with them from the beginning (John’s baptism) through Jesus’ resurrection and ascension. They proposed Joseph called Barsabas (surnamed Justus) and Matthias. [This shows that there were some that traveled with them from the beginning to this time who were not included in the twelve.] They prayed and asked God to show them which of the two should be chosen to occupy the ministry and apostleship that Judas lost. They drew lots and Matthias was chosen as the twelfth Apostle. [Note: Casting Lots was a provision of the Law (Lev. 16:8) There is no further mention of the Casting of Lots after this incident in the New Testament] Next week: Acts 2
