After all, a lot of people like the results, but not the surgery or the painful recovery. Alternative, less-invasive procedures have come and gone, and the latest is a treatment called the “microcurrent face-lift.” We did some research to find out more about it. What Is It? This particular “face-lift” isn’t really a face-lift at all. Instead, it’s a non-surgical procedure that uses the application of gentle electric stimulation to increase blood flow and tighten the skin. Cotton-tipped prongs are applied to different parts of the face and neck while a mild current stimulates skin and muscles. The entire process takes about an hour, and requires no anesthesia and no recovery time—you can go right back to work. It’s considered safe, and chances of irritation or other side effects are rare. Most patients describe a tingling sensation, but consider the treatment virtually painless. The current is reputed to help tone and strengthen the muscles of the face, increase blood flow, encourage lymph draining (clearing toxins from tissue), stimulate cellular renewal, and promote the production of both collagen and elastin—the elements that help face to retain its shape. Results include toned muscles which can help brow and jaw lines appear more defined, reduced appearances of fine lines and wrinkles, improved skin texture, better facial circulation, and a youthful “glow” to the face. Proponents also say the treatment stimulates the production of amino acids, necessary for skin repair, essentially improving the overall health of the skin. One interesting fact about the treatment was that it was initially used to treat patients who suffered from facial palsy (or Bell’s palsy), a condition in which certain nerves in the face are damaged, resulting in a temporary form of paralysis. Doctors found that the treatment not only helped muscles regain strength, but improved the condition of the skin as well.~VKS
