#BoomerDiet #MarvinOSmithDC #Sodium #Sugar Did you know “Baby Boomers have the longest life expectancy of any generation thus far”. Having said that in “The Doctors” article found in the August 2013 USA Weekend magazine, it notes how researchers now say this group also has “higher levels of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, and higher rates of disability, than the generation that came before.” The article mentions “three more strategies to help keep Boomers strong and healthy in their golden years.” The first strategy is to “cut sodium.” It has been well established “too much of it can cause excess fluid to build up in the body, which places an added burden on the heart”. A limit of sodium intake to no more than 1,500 mg’s a day is recommended which is “less (than) three-quarters of a teaspoon of salt”. A majority of canned and processed foods contained high levels of sodium already and then when you grab for that salt shaker you are only adding more to your total. My father Dr. Smith used to caution just as strongly against that extra pack or tablespoon of sugar added to your coffee or cereal or that extra donut in the morning or soda in the afternoon having a deleterious effect on the heart’s health.
