Born: September 17, 1950 (age 64) in Vadnagar - Narendra Damodardas Modi is the 15th and current Prime Minister of India. Born to a family of grocers belonging to the Ghanchi-Teli (oil-presser) community, in Vadnagar Gujarat. He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and his wife, Heeraben. He helped his father sell tea at Vadnagar railway station. As a child and as a teenager, he ran a tea stall with his brother near a bus terminus. In 1967, he completed his schooling in Vadnagar, where a teacher described him as being an average student, but a keen debater who had an interest in theatre. - Wiki About Two weeks ago, Vikas Kumar a reporter from Tehelka Hindi, came over to meet me with the agenda of finding out my experience of photographing Modi in 2011 for the cover of TIME magazine. Vikas pointed that Im probably one of the last photographers to have had full access to do so. Im not sure about that but it was interesting point. However, my experience of photographing Modi, at the time Chief Minister of Gujarat was quite - unexpected. He addressed me with my name, when he came into the room. He had done some reading about Indian politicians who had made it to the cover of TIME, & He was game to try all sorts of things - including my insane request to round up all the wild peacocks around his house in his garden and place him in btw them. His staff did make an attempt but in vain and then we settled for 20 odd geese in his backyard. I think that the ghosts of Godhra continue to shadow him but having said that on a personal note - I feel at least we dont have a mute, inactive PM. I was impressed by his speech at Nepals parliament this summer. A friend from Kathmandu who works at the Washington Post said that After a long time - finally someone addressed us a nation and not as divided factions within it. Needless to say Modi is very aware of the consequences of being on camera and damn does he know how to work it. On his Bday - Heres a small Modi mood board from the shoot in his residence in Gandhinagar from 2011. Photo by @sumitdayal #indiaphotoproject #narendramodi #bjp #modi #primeminister
