Born on this date in 1946, one of the true greats, Duane Allman. After unsuccessful attempts to create a couple of bands (the Allman Joys, Hour Glass), DA went to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and became one of the famed Swampers, playing on recordings with a wide range of people (including Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, King Curtis, Boz Skaggs, Otis Rush, Johnny Jenkins, Delaney and Bonnie, Herbie Mann, Lulu, John Hammond, and many more) before forming the Allman Brothers with little brother Gregg. He also played with Derek and the Dominoes, creating the instantly recognizable introductory lick to Layla. He died much too young in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971. Before the Allman Brothers, Duane recorded some songs as leader of his own band that werent released until after his death (on the Duane Allman Anthology album). This is one of my favorites.
