Borno APC declares Shettima as party leader Sunday, 02 February 2014 Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno State yesterday declared their allegiance to Governor Kashim Shettima as the leader of the party in the state. They made the declaration at the inauguration of interim executives of APC for the state on Saturday, which held at the instance of Governor Shettima. The inauguration was conducted by the National Secretary of the APC, Tijjani Tumsa, under the supervision of the state governor. While describing Shettima as leader of the APC in Borno, prominent members of the party who spoke at the event also called on the governor to reconcile with his estranged political godfather, Ali Modu Sheriff. They commended the governor for his leadership style, which they said had helped attract key PDP members into the APC in the state. Speaking at the event, Shettima described the emergence of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as ruling party in Nigeria’s polity as the worst calamity to have befallen the country after slavery and colonialism. “Apart from slavery and colonialism, nothing has befallen a black man than the emergence of PDP as ruling party in the country”, he said. He lamented that despite billion of dollars that accrued to the country from oil revenue, the PDP had nothing to show in its 14 years of existence. “For the past 14 years Nigeria has earned billion of dollars which is unprecedented in the contemporary history of the country. This is a government that cannot boast of tarring 5000 kilometers of road and cannot boast of generating 5000 megawatts of electricity,” he added. Earlier, Alhaji Tumsa said Shettima had worked tirelessly in the APC’s formative stage as one of its very proactive, foresighted and dogged governors. “Borno is at the centre of Nigerian politics and at the centre of APC politics being the first state where the leaders sat together to provide leadership for the party. We profess to provide a change in politics for Nigeria and Borno is already showing example.” For his part, the newly inaugurated interim chairman of the party, Senator Kaka Malam Yale, urged members of the party to eschew politics of bitterness. The inauguration puts to an end severe efforts by former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff to supervise the inauguration with his associates insisting he is leader of the party contrary to the party’s guidelines that places leadership with Governors in APC controlled states. Meanwhile, the zonal national vice chairman (Northeast) of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mallam Umar Duhu, yesterday described as null and void the inauguration of the Borno State Interim Committee (SIC) by the national interim secretary of the party, Alhaji Tijjani Tumsa. In a statement emailed to journalists, Duhu said he was not informed about the event, pointing out that anything done without his approval will not be accepted. “In my capacity as the Vice Chairman, I am the only one empowered by the APC to inaugurate all APC State Interim Committee (SIC) Members. I had inaugurated, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Adamawa States. I only have Borno and Yobe States to conclude my assignment in the Zone. “His Excellency, the Governor of Yobe State is out of the Country, any day he comes back, I shall inaugurate the committee in his state. For Borno, I am on the last lap of discussions with the leaders of the Party in the State, to inaugurate them. “What I am doing is to carry everyone along. I will be failing in my responsibilities if I go ahead to inaugurate, and does not carry all members of the SIMC along,” he said.
