Bottle Trees - Do you ever wonder the story behind these ? They keeps the haints away ! The roots of bottle trees started over 1,000 years ago. It originated in Africa, incorporated into Voodoo in some places. The intent: To trap evil spirits. In olden times, people believed the whir of the wind through a bottle was the sound of spirits trapped inside. The spirits would be drawn to the shiny, colorful bottles and they would become trapped inside the bottles. Then a cap was put on the bottles and they were destroyed on a sunny day. In those times, people would keep bottles by their entryways to protect their home from evil spirits, and the bottle tree was born. When African slaves arrived in the southern USA (primarily in Louisiana and Mississippi, they created bottle trees from dead trees or large limbs next to their quarters and adorned them with glass bottles scavenged from their master’s garage piles. *Blue bottles were coveted, considered to be the most powerful of the bottles. Bottle trees, often referred to as poor mans stained glass, can be made of just about anything - wooden posts with large nails, welded metal rods, bottles stuck on the dead branches of real trees and a very easy way to make one is sticking them on the branches of an artificial Christmas tree. Any color of bottle can be used, but *blue ones are considered the best, because of their centuries-old association with ghosts and spirits. Thus, the legend of the Bottle Trees.
