Bottled ketchup and barbecue sauce is convenient yes. BUT artificial coloring, flavors and high fructose corn syrup are not the healthiest to consume. Buying ketchup and barbecue sauce made with all natural ingredients and no high fructose corn syrup can cost you a pretty penny for a small bottle. If you or your family enjoys these sauces on a regular basis, making your own is worth it! It’s easy and not at all time consuming either. Ingredients • 1 cup Homemade Ketchup (see recipe below) • ½ cup water • 1 tablespoon minced dried onion or onion powder • ½ cup apple cider vinegar • 2 tablespoons molasses • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • ¼ teaspoon allspice • ¼ teaspoon salt • ¼ teaspoon celery seed • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon • optional 2-3 dashes hot sauce Instructions 1. Add all ingredients to a sauce pan and stir to combine. 2. Bring to a boil. 3. Reduce heat. 4. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes or until desired consistency. 5. Makes about 1½ cups. Nutrition Values Serves: 6 Serving size: ¼ cup Calories: 72 Fat: 1.3g Carbohydrates: 15g Sugar: 10.6g Sodium: 256mg Fiber: 1.3g Protein: 1.3g Cholesterol: 0 Healthier Homemade Tomato Ketchup Ingredients • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 garlic cloves minced • 1 cup chopped onion • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar • ¼ cup red wine vinegar • ¼ cup honey • 1 teaspoon salt • 28 ounce can tomato puree • 12 ounce can tomato paste • ½ teaspoon ground cloves • ½ teaspoon oregano Directions 1. Heat oil and sauté garlic until fragrant. 2. Add onion and cook until softened. 3. Pour in vinegars, honey and salt. 4. Bring to a boil. 5. Add tomato puree and paste. 6. Bring to a boil. 7. Add in cloves and oregano. 8.Cook until reduced and sauce thickens about 15-20 minutes. 9. Pour into blender and blend until smooth. 10. Refrigerate. Makes 30 ounces.
