Bottom line on the Amazon vs Hachette feud, in as simple terms as I can manage: -Do I think Amazon is abusing its near-monopolic power by intentionally crippling Hachette sales? Yes. I do. -Am I personally affected by the contract dispute? No. I dont write for Hachette. -Do I think I will someday be affected by Amazons abusive negotiation tactics? Yes, I do. When theyve moved beyond Hachette to one of the publishers I write for (Penguin Random House & Harlequin). And that WILL happen (at least with PRH). -Do I think that readers/consumers/buyers will be negatively affected by an Amazon monopoly/near-monoply? YES. I think that when Amazon *can* raise prices, it *will.* Amazon is a business. It will make money any way it can. (Amazon has already cut royalties on its audio books.) Amazon does *not* care about either its content providers (authors, in this case) or its customers more than it cares about its own bottom line. Period. Thats the same as it would be for any business. -Do I blame/judge readers for buying books from Amazon? ABSOLUTELY NOT. If Amazon is where you can afford to buy books, buy your books at Amazon. Those are still legitimate books purchases and no legitimate book purchase hurts authors. But I would ask you to keep in mind, particularly if youre looking for Hachette books, that MANY OTHER BOOK STORES WILL SHIP to your house. Including many indies, which supports your local community rather than a huge corporation like Amazon. -Do I have all the relevant information? No, I do not. I wish I did. -Do I have all the answers? No. Again, I wish I did.
