Boxing .......... an excerpt from the Sceptic book .............In human history no sport surprises me like boxing. A lot of episodes end up with what we call a knock out. This is essentially a loss of consciousness for a brief time. But not many have been lucky. Some have not woken up. Some have really been knocked out! Boxing is a funny sport; two people are enclosed in a ring by ropes so they can’t run away! Then they start pounding each other in order to win. Many blows land on the head. We seem to forget that the head houses the brain. And the brain is the nerve centre of all functions in the body. The question is why anyone would want to mess up with the control engine of the body, resulting in a loss of consciousness intentionally? And the ring is surrounded by a fanatical crowd baying to see a knock out. Isn’t this madness? This is no sport; this is serious trauma to a vital organ of the body. The brain never forgives those who don’t respect it. People have died on stage, yet others like the great Mohammed Ali have been left with Parkinson disease (check it in your dictionary). It’s not a nice thing to see a star almost reduced to a cabbage. I have no doubt that in 500 yrs this kind of thing won’t be allowed. The humans would have become wiser, probably more intelligent, not to willingly mess up with their brains. Not even in rugby, a very physical sport comes close to the perils of boxing. We have seen young people collapse even following a football match yet there was rarely any crash of heads. In football most collapses that result in instant death are few and are as a result of some underlying heart problem. People, let us play chess and be happy if. I had my way I would ban boxing!.
