Boys played sports and girls were cheerleaders and after the games and almost every saturday night there was a party at someone’s house, Joy rides in our older siblings or parents car was any time we could get permission to drive. Freds house was six blocks from mine he lived on the other side of the park so when ever I could I would drive Pam’s Camaro over, he lived on Pinehurst where southern curved around I lost control one morning when i stopped to see Fred before school and drove to 7 eleven. I was showing of my driving skills while I admired Freds good looks when I hit the curb, it turned out those are two things not to do at the same time. Fred all ready graduated and I was in the 10th grade, I thought he was the best thing since rocky road ice cream with extra marshmallow thank goodness he had away with fixing cars so the hub cap I lost in the forty mile an hour turn was replaced and life went on. Fred had a couple of extracurricular actives and sharing a beer with him was entertaining and for me and Wendy it only took one to make everything super funny, so funny I we had to go out side and regain our composure this is one of the first memories I have of laughing attacks, feeling embarrassed of all the giggling because Fred was pretty serious, don’t think I ever heard him laugh maybe a smile or two guess when your older you have more control over you emotions or you just hide them better. Fred stepped out side of his apartment through a metal screen door the ones with the diamond shapes framing the screen and a handle with the square button you push with your thumb after closing the screen he stood there underneath the amber colored porch light looking dreamy in his dark blue shirt with one bold white stripe at the bottom and two smaller ones in the middle he had on grey levis that fit him oh’so perfectly, I looked up at him flicking my kool cigarette to the curb and thought about kissing him his lips shinned like he just licking them and I was just about to say something about how nice his lips were when Wendy said its late!and just like that fantasy of Freds wet lips against mine embraced with my arms around his neck on his tiny door step was over!! I looked at my watch and noticed it was after nine i turned back to Fred and told him we gotta get going…that was the last time I saw Fred we talked a couple times over the phone but he was always busy working on cars and I wanted to hang out so I went back to seeing John Guilmette and riding to the beach with him and his brothers. John was my first boyfriend we have been going together since 8th grade and two years is a long time, things were getting boring then he transferred to Downy High and I just wasn’t feeling all that… girls with long blond hair with tans year round who drove pink or teal green Karman Ghia Volkswagen’s, John was adorable and I truly cared about him but I guess it was puppy love I thought of him like a brother. John was my first boyfriend the first boy I kissed and first I went to second base with we were always together, we stayed on the phone for hours talking about everything he was one of triplet boys very cute and we were inseparable for 2 years and then my eyes found Fred and John never looked the same, the only thing is I only saw Fred twice when Kelly Hughes had her Halloween party and me and John were back together again. We went to the beach every weekend even when it was cold arriving by 5 am I always brought a blanket to wrap up in while John went surfing. I waited until the sun broke through the clouds to get up the ocean always sparkled and the sky so beautiful with the most romantic sunrise these mornings are also when my spirit came alive thinking about life and god and how big the ocean was and what was beyond the pink and purple sky’s a how the sun could be so bright giving light to a happy day… One of those sunrise’s on a early Sunday morning I was singing along to Don’t Rock the the Boat Baby by the Hues Boys played sports and girls were cheerleaders and after the games and almost every saturday night there was a party at someone’s house, Joy rides in our older siblings or parents car was any time we could get permission to drive.
