Boys will be boys... 9/11/1903 The annual scrap between the senior and junior classes for possession of the flag staff on the high school building came off in the early hours of Monday morning last. The senior boys suffered little opposition from the underclassmen compared with the scrap last year, when it took on the form of hand-to-hand conflict on the dizziest heights of the school roof, but from an unexpected source they feel they got their money’s worth. The senior flag-defenders this year comprised a quartette made up of Dwight Dickinson, Will Farrand, Harry Jerome, and Fin Howard. Profiting by their former experience at the business they came upon the field early in the game--soon after the clock at midnight announced the arrival of Monday,-- took possession of the flag-pole and lay in waiting for the attacking party of the juniors. Nothing much happened until daybreak, about the time for school to commence, when a stern voice from below commanded the boys to come down at once. It seems that in protecting themselves against assault the boys had barricaded the door leading to the back room, and it was impossible for school exercises to commence until this was opened. At the same time they had violated an order of the board of education in going up on the roof. President Galley representing the board, gave them a severe reprimand on this account, and told them it must not occur again, under penalty of expulsion. The method of reaching the flag-staff is very dangerous, ascent to the roof and the top of the staff being made by means of a ladder, and the board is determined to put a stop to the practice. Superintendent Kern says he is glad to see a good class spirit in the school, but he did object to the kind that interfered with all the school work, and he gave all the offenders until Wednesday morning to think about what they had done without the interference of school duties. The boys say they did not know the regular scrap on the roof had been prohibited, and had unintentionally barricaded the back room. They are all in school today and everything is going along as smooth as a marriage bill.
