Brampton Ward 7/8 Regional Councillor debate analysis. ( spoiler - conclusion - at the end ). https://youtube/watch?v=2CaC3tFN8pI Disclaimer: This is just my opinion. You make up your own mind. I do not have a tie up or any agreement with any of these candidates. My comments below using >>>>>> Opening Remarks: - [ Jotvinder Sohi ] has some interesting points, but I had a bit of trouble understanding his english - [ Anderson Logan ] is detailed oriented. He compared the fact that we spent 2.5 million on Brampton Transit and 43.5 went to Zum last year. >>>>>> I think that is so because we have a Federal and Provincial allocation for Zum - [ Gael Miles ] => I have been a Councillor for 25 years. I have been there because people support me. - Cheryl Rodricks => Its time for change. I will bring vision, commitment, trust and energy ... >>>>>> wait isnt this exactly from what Bonnie Crombie says, I wonder who copied whom :) QUESTION #1 : Some questions were passé specially the first one. What does social responsibility mean to you as a Councillor skip to 15:22 (Again a bit passé. I want to hear core concerns, understand their knowledge and see what they can do. You can perhaps skip this question too, Q #3 is an serious question) QUESTION #2 : how will you manage tax payers money more effectively - [ Anderson Logan ] - started very smoothly and then forgot the question mid way. Brought a good chuckle to me :) - [ Gael Miles ] - out taxes have stayed below the rate of inflation - [ Cheryl Rodricks ] - there used to be the value based expense system .. now we are on rule .. >>>>>> (Cheryl GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT, you may have confused your own self saying it and flipped at 18:45 in video). For viewers the fact is that we used to have RULE based, then we switched to VALUE based and after the current problems, there is thinking on the table to switch back to RULE based as its simpler and easier to follow - [ Jotvinder Sohi ] had a good idea of bringing in more competitive bidding and taking a fairer share of our taxes from the region. skip to 22:34 for QUESTION #3 : will you lobby with the City to put a moratorium on houses in order to complete pending projects >>>>>> I like this question, points to a core problem - [ Gael Miles ] I did exactly that when I started 25 years go and learnt that as a municipality we are not allowed to do that by the Province. City of Brampton is mandated by the province as a Growth Municipality. But we as a City have put in place a plan to assure we have infrastructure in place, but for that you need development charges and the catch up with Capital projects is because we dont have enough development charges available. A lot of it is timing, a lot of it is getting approval from another levels of government. >>>>>> I agree a bit with what she said. We know that govt. bodies are slow to give approval. But we can perhaps do it better by getting some private bodies to compete on Capital projects along side our City departments. And #2 borrow short term on low costs using our AAA rating to manage the timing issue with development charges. This will really be profitable rather than being a cost, because inflation will raise the price of capital projects more than the interest costs on AAA rated debt. But the key is to keep it short term so we are not putting our children in debt. - [ Cheryl Rodricks ] Brampton has a lot of land. We have to set aside specific land use for Industrial and specific for residential. >>>>>> I am amazed at her capability to use specific as a word 3 times and yet not have any specificity in her answer. - [ Jotvinder Sohi ] My builder made my house wrong. City employees hide their faces. Close to Gore Rd. and Queen St. land is sitting there for industry and business. I got an answer from the Regional Councillor that this land is sitting from last 15 years or so ... lets bring the industry back. >>>>>> Went into his own problems related to his house despite asking what the question is again. uff .. stick to the topic please ... He is perhaps a very capable person but his fertile mind switches context so fast that he looses me. I will like him better if he can stick to the topic a bit more. - [ Anderson Logan ] we may loose a lot of jobs. Personally I wont mandate for a moratorium. I may levy heavier taxes on the builders who are making millions. We should borrow and complete our projects. Chrysler is here because they get Zero taxes ( Gael corrected that Chrysler does pay taxes ) skip to 29:44 for QUESTION #4 : What areas of the Brampton is there an opportunity for development and to bring in more jobs - [ Cheryl Rodricks ] Castlemore and up north - we can look at those areas for more housing or developing for more industrial use >>>>>> Again my factual correction. Castlemore and up north is out of Ward 7/8. - [ Jotvinder Sohi ] Some land close to Bramlea go station. This business house is moving out. This land can be used for University. >>>>>> I agree with this point. I want the university in Ward 7/8 instead of downtown. - [ Anderson Logan ] Currently it seems that profit comes before people .. Brampton can invest in our own industry ... like a solar panel plant, or wind mills - [ Gael Miles ] I am assuming that you are not talking physically but as we go about growing the economic base in the community. There is a secondary plan which shows growth. City of Brampton has 4,000 acres. Its more than any municipality in GTA which is ready for business. Air Canada and Canon are coming to Brampton. MY FINAL UNDERSTANDING AFTER LISTENING TO ALL : - [ Jotvinder Sohi ] => I will give low cost land, I will slash builder profits ... and I agree with all my colleagues except the incumbent. He is very passionate and it feels to me that he has a very fertile mind. But I tend to loose him. I have to focus very hard to understand the continuity of his sentences and what he means from it. I wish he did not stray away from the topic as often. - [ Anderson Logan ] => He is detailed oriented and has some good answers. - [ Gael Miles ] => All is Well in Brampton. I think we can do better but, interesting to hear her. She tends to provide details and carries a positive outlook. From experience she knows what will work and what will not. - [ Cheryl Rodricks ] => Its time for change. I have no specifics, but we need a change ... let me tell you all the problems you have and then some more ... we need change >>>>>> uff ! My mind is debating between Anderson Logan and Gael Miles. Not to influence your vote, I wont divulge anything more than that. MENTION IN COMMENTS ON MY PAGE ( facebook/bramptonAjay ) IF YOU APPRECIATE IT AND IF YOU WILL WANT ME TO POST A SIMILAR ANALYSIS FOR MAYOR CANDIDATES DEBATE TOO !
