Brands Hatch Finale Carnage We take a look back to Finals day just over a week ago at Brands Hatch, when several cars were involved in a turn one crash that saw no fewer than 5 cars unable to complete the first lap of race 1, with a further 3 unable to finish the race after suffering a huge amount of damage. When the lights went out at the start of race 1, Airwaves Racings Fabrizio Giovanardi made an ambitious move on Hondas Gordon Shedden that resulted in the latter, who started from third on the grid being turned around leaving him stationary in the middle of the track. As a consequence there was a whole host of drivers who bunched up behind the incident, when an unsighted Dave Newsham swerved to avoid Sheddens stricken Honda, that caused him to hit Jack Goffs Volkwagen, sending him up onto two wheels, as his own team mate Alain Menu, who was also unsighted went under the back of his car. At the same time another unsighted driver Rob Austin, slammed his Audi into the back of Sheddens Honda, that also caused his own team mate Hunter Abbott to run into the back of his now obliterated Audi. Tom Ingram managed to slither past and avoid any contact by taking to the grass along with Pirteks Andrew Jordan, as Matt Neal was punted into the gravel trap by Abbotts Audi whos steering was now broken as he tried to manoeuvre his machine through turn one. The incident also saw Lea Wood and Marc Hynes take evasive action that forced both of them through the gravel trap. As a result Shedden had to bring his car back to the pits for major repairs, both Audis were left obliterated in the gravel trap, Goff brought his VW to a standstill at the next corner Druids, and Neals Honda sat it the middle of the track at Paddock Hill Bend with broken steering. For Shedden it was bad news as he had to retire in the pits, with Dave Newsham and Alain Menu both also pitting, for minor repairs. Both Menu & Newsham made it back out on track under the safety car, with Newsham returning to the fray a lap down and Menu now all the way down in last place. There was further disappointment for Newsham on lap 7, when contact was made between himself and Chris Stocktons Chevrolet Cruze, causing Stockton to spin, and Newsham to hit the barriers. However both managed to get back on track and continue with the race. Lap 8 would then see further carnage and another safety car period, as the third VW of Warren Scott touched wheels with the BMW of Nick Foster, causing Scotts rear suspension to break sending him across the track at approximately 140mph into the crash barrier. Lap 16 would then see the Toyota of Luke Hines and the MG of Marc Hynes make contact, which saw The Toyota spin on track, and resulted in his team mate, an unsighted Jack Cole make contact forcing both of the United Autosports Toyotas out of the race. All in all a pair of Civic Tourers, a pair of Audi A4s, a pair of Toyota Avensis and a pair of Volkswagen CCs all retired from the race with extensive damage from race 1. Luckily for Alain Menu he managed to drag his VW all the way up to a fine 13th place finish at the Kent venue.
