Braving snowfall, doctors reach out to patients MUDASIR YAQOOB Srinagar, Jan 23: Braving heavy snowfall that put normal life out of gear yesterday in Kashmir, the Resident Doctors ( RD) despite all odds reached out to patients in city hospitals to avoid any inconvenience to them. Indoor patients at various hospitals appreciated the efforts of Resident Doctors for making it to hospitals despite heavy snowfall. “ In morning we expected that no doctor would visit patients for their routine check ups. However, the resident doctors arrived and performed their duties,” said Ishrat, an attendant at SKIMS. “ Despite travelling on foot, they worked for extra time as some of their senior doctors could have make it to hospital,” she said. Season’s second heavy snowfall affected normal life on Wednesday, snapping the road and air links to Kashmir with rest of the world. One of the Resident Doctors at SKIMS said that “ it was time to act than to take benefit of excuses.” “ There were two genuine excuses in fact to remain absent from duty. First, roads were blocked and second that heavy snowfall. I chose none of them as I didn’t want patients to suffer. I thought various medicos would not be able to reach out here that shook my conscience to travel on foot,” he said. Some of the Resident Doctors faced immense problems to reach the hospitals. “ I slipped thrice on way to hospital from Chadoora to SMHS. It was difficult to travel through accumulated snow,” he said. Resident Doctors at Lal Ded Hospital here also had to face immense hardships. One of the female doctors said that she had to work for 10 hours without break on Wednesday “ As some of our senior doctors couldn’t reach to the hospital, resident doctors performed their all duties to avoid any inconvenience to patients. I voluntarily worked for consecutive 10 hours. It was really a hectic day with triple workload on us,” she said. “ In morning my family had advised me to stay back at home, but my conscience asked me to leave for hospital as I knew that most of the medicos would be unavailable due to snowfall,” she added. Patients and attendants at Chest Disease and Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial ( JLNM) hospitals here said that presence of Resident Doctors made them comfortable. “ In absence of senior doctors, they performed well and we noticed that they worked for extra time for convenience of the patients,” they said.
