[Brazilian Portuguese - Using Te & Voce] Okay, so before we begin - TopicsExpress

[Brazilian Portuguese - Using Te & Voce] Okay, so before we begin things here for today, theres a few things that we have to correct/clarify about the use of te & voce. A big thanks to Mr. Ramon Carvalho for clarifying that for us - muito obrigada! :) [VOCÊ and TE are NOT the same. There´s a difference between what is acceptable and what is grammarly correct. For example, sometimes, we who study English as a second language, know more about grammar than the Americans themselves. The same happens to you, who study Portuguese... not everything a Brazilian says that is correct is actually correct, sometimes, it´s just USUAL. I dont know if you know what I mean. As for TE and VOCÊ, is important to know that VOCÊ is a personal pronoun, which means it is a pronoun that can replace a name. They are EU, VOCÊ, ELE, ELA, NÓS, VÓS, ELES. For each of the Personal Pronouns, there is a OBLIQUE PRONOUN, which is a pronoun that can replace a noun, when it is an OBJECT (grammarly speaking) in a sentence. The OBLIQUE PRONOUNS can NEVER REPLACE A SUBJECT, but they can replace a NOUN. They are: me, te, se, o, a, lhe, nos, vos, os, as, lhes. (You learning Portuguese can study this deeper, even us, Brazilians, sometimes get confused about the use). In Portuguese, for YOU, in the singular, we can both say VOCÊ or TU. Depending on the region one is more used than the other. If you say I LOVE YOU and translate it as EU >>TE
