Brazilian halal meat export sales increase 447% in last decade Brazilian halal meat exports grew 447 percent and 76 percent in sales and volume, respectively, in the past ten years. The stastistics were shared during last week’s Brazil Halal Workshop, held in Brasilia. The event was sponsored by the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporters (Abiec), the Federation of Muslim Associations in Brazil (Fambras) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brazil). The Muslim meat market is on the rise and now represents almost one-third of Brazilian beef exports, said Fernando Sampaio, Abiec executive director. He affirmed that Abiec promoted the event "to show the credibility and assurance of halal slaughter in Brazil.” The workshop also addressed a wide array of questions on halal slaughter procedures to an audience made up of ambassadors, government representatives and other companies. The halal practices are determined by Islamic law. Halal rules requires that the animal be in a healthy state before its slaughter, that its blood be completely drained and it should suffer as little as possible. The procedure must also be entirely carried out by a Muslim. In 2012, the main buyers of Brazilian halal meat were Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Libya, Angola, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Algeria and Kuwait.
