He has played and recorded with Clifton Chenier, John Hiatt, John Mayall and Mark Knopfler (of Dire Straits), Carroll said. “Eric Clapton says Sonny ‘is the most advanced guitarist in the world,’ ” Carroll, a guitar instructor at Denison University, said. “Sonny has influenced Derek Trucks, Warren Haines and countless others.”
