Breaking news... Arkansas State Police now confirm one fatality has occurred in a mid-afternoon, accident near the 70-mile marker of Interstate 40. The as yet unidentified female victims vehicle, was one of two involved in a rear-end collision, according to authorities, that resulted in her vehicle losing control, leaving the roadway and plunging into Piney Creek. Once in the water, authorities say that vehicle quickly disappeared into the depths of the creek. State Police, Johnson County Sheriffs authorities, Johnson and Pope County OEM dive teams, and local police and fire from neighboring communities responded to the scene. While the accident occurred about 3:10 p/m, severe weather hampered authorities in their investigation and recovery efforts. Dive team members and other authorities finally recovered the vehicle about 8:20 p/m, and confirmed the fatality. Authorities also thanked Arkansas Game and Fish officers, who assisted at the scene. The victims identity is being withheld by State police, pending the notification of next of kin.
