Breast Milk, Solid Food, and Allergy Prevention: Are they connected? Although there are numerous studies that indicates that infants who are breastfed experience lower rates of respiratory tract infections, wheezing, otitis media, GI infections, and sudden infant death syndrome. The role of breastfeeding in allergy prevention is still an area with intensive studies being done. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommends human milk as the sole source of nutrition for the first 6 months of age. The consumption of solid foods with the combination of human milk is highly recommended between 6 months and 12 months of age. Results of the studies have turned out to be conflicting and has no clear correlation that breast milk prevents allergies.
