Brian Greene, in The Hidden Reality, FINALLY got me to understand - TopicsExpress

Brian Greene, in The Hidden Reality, FINALLY got me to understand the rational behind the concept of Parallel Universes with this example: If Imelda buys 500 pairs of designer jeans and 1000 pairs of shoes (clever choice of names Brian!) and she chooses to wear a different combination each day she will have unique, unrepeated outfits for nearly 1400 years. However, if she lives longer than that she will inevitably repeat outfits. And if she has an infinite lifespan she will repeat EACH outfit an INFINITE number of times. The number of particles in our observable universe (with a diameter of 82 billion light years) is very large, but necessarily finite. If space is infinite that means that there are infinite areas of space with the same diameter forever beyond our ability to observe. And because a finite number of particles can only be arranged in a finite number of ways, NECESSARILY the exact same arrangement of particles as in our observable universe WILL be repeated. An INFINITE number of times. Not to mention the infinite number where the arrangement is ALMOST, but not quite, identical as this universe. Of course, this view does not take into account anything beyond the physical and assumes that we are merely the sum total of our physical particles. Certainly I believe that there is more to the picture....
