Brian Kelly ‘feels bad’ for Notre Dame players out because of academic probe Updated: October 2, 2014 11:08PM SOUTH BEND, Ind. – KeiVarae Russell recently vented about the length of Notre Dame’s academic probe. The cornerback is one of five players being held out of games and practices while the school looks into suspected academic dishonesty. His coach, Brian Kelly, understands what Russell is going through. “I feel bad for them. That’s the feelings that I have. They’re missing [a] significant amount of playing time,” Kelly said Thursday. “That’s hard to give up playing time. I know when I was in college, you miss a game, when you are 18, 19, 20, that’s catastrophic.” Russell, wide receiver DaVaris Daniels, defensive lineman Ishaq Williams and linebacker Kendall Moore have been sidelined since mid-August. Safety Eilar Hardy became the fifth player held out at the end of August. Honor code hearings could wrap up by the end of the week. “I didn’t talk to KeiVarae firsthand, but based upon the information that is secondhand, third-hand – I don’t have any firsthand information – it sounds like some time next week with the decision,” Kelly said. Russell had his hearing earlier this week.
