I am sure that you had good chuckle at my awesome spelling of “light snakes and drinks will be provided.” Oh my word, I am so glad that this made so many peoples’ day and then as usual, I lost track of time and I thought that today was Tuesday and tomorrow Wednesday. Anyway, thankfully you all know my strengths and weaknesses. Wednesday 12 June at 14H00 for 14H30 is the long-awaited official launch of the SA CAN Halo ER24 helicopter. I would like to thank each and every person reading this, as without your support and of course, Halo Aviation and ER24, this initiative would not be a reality. What makes this six-month feasibility study and trial so unique is that over 60 medical practitioners, from basic life support to doctors, ICU nurses, ground crew, volunteers, SAPS Airwing and 15 squadron pilots have all teamed up under the leadership of ER24 and Halo Aviation, who heard our desperate plea to get a helicopter back in KZN after NetCare Aeromedical closed down. Another unique aspect is that all registered SA CAN family members (8500+ financially subscribing) are part of the solution; each person is known to us and can be tracked and traced. We have empowered you to be good Samaritans and at the press of the panic button, request immediate support. This will drastically reduce response times, as the craft can be mobile in about three minutes. Lastly, SA CAN is putting R25 000 a month towards this initiative and we plan to grow this to ensure that it is sustainable and that we can also do mercy flights when an injury cannot be billed according to medical aid criteria or if the person has no medical aid at all. To date since the 14th of May, six missions have been flown with five lives saved. Sadly, one patient passed away as we landed on scene. So family, spread the word; we need all the support across KZN if we are going to cover costs, save lives and keep your Flight Operations Team in the air.
