The European Seventh Framework Programme has announced funding for a four-year international research programme, SYS-MEL, centred on new diagnostics in the melanoma arena. Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and currently there are few effective therapies for later stages of the disease. Led by University College Dublin (UCD), SYS-MEL will build on sturdy foundations laid down by another EU-funded programme, Target-Melanoma, researching the hallmarks of melanoma. UCD News Nuacht UCD Posted 11 June 2013 Official Japanese Racing Laboratory licences Equinome Speed Gene test EquinomeTM, a University College Dublin (UCD) spin-out company, has signed an agreement with the Japanese Laboratory of Racing Chemistry (LRC) for the exclusive Japanese licensing of the Equinome Speed Gene Test. The agreement allows the LRC to be the sole provider of the Equinome Speed Gene Test to the Japanese bloodstock and horseracing industry. Cork student wins top engineering prize for orthopaedic innovation Patrick Byrnes, a student at Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), has scooped the top prize in the student engineer of the year awards run by Engineers Ireland. He won for his project that explores ways to improve manufacturing processes relating to orthopaedics through automation.
