Bristol Hill, Brislington – 1923 and 2014. It is impossible to get an exact “Now” view, as the 1923 photo was taken from one of the raised private gardens bordering the road, so today’s photo had to be taken at street level. In the “Then” photo tram car No 223 descends the hill towards the terminus in Brislington Village - it is on the No 9 route, Hotwells to Brislington. The tower of St Luke’s Church can be glimpsed above the roofs in both photos. The houses on the other side of the road seem to have changed little over the past 90 years - the high wall, railings, steps and drainpipes are virtually unchanged. However there have been major changes on this side of the road which has been widened further down the hill. The Ritz Cinema was opened here in 1938 and was a popular venue for many years - it closed in 1968 and, after the front of the building was removed, it became a Kwik-Save supermarket and then a D-I-Y store. A Brislington resident from 1923 would still recognise Bristol Hill today but they would be horrified to see what has happened to the “village” further down the hill.
