Bristol; Venice of the West. I am six years into a projected 18 year labour of love to recreate the Bristol of the 1828 George Ashmead 1:2400 Map. A computer game for virtual tourists in first person perspective with photo real textures allowing you, dear time traveller to freely, without restriction wander the main cobbled streets, lanes and some alleyways, climb the hills, cross fields and climb selected church towers; the city in all its Georgian glory with tall ships, horse sleds, hackneys, hansoms and glass/pottery kilns. So far it has been mostly research, collecting 100,000 photos, drawings, watercolours, paintings, maps, plans, books, pdfs, architects elevations and making new friends, with freelance architectural historians, humanities professors, photographers and history lovers, especially with the Bristol Then and Now group, which continues to be a happy distraction. But now the 3d virtual reconstruction of buildings will be my main past time.
