Broadly speaking, there are two types of cat who are conferred the honour of the LCR ground pass: the long-term guests who can behave themselves with other cats, and the not-so long term feral ones who find pen-life too stressful. Wee Ace was given his ground pass at the start of this week, and is a strange mix of both groups. He arrived with us back in Spring as a kitten, together with his Mum who had been straying with him. At the time he was around 10 weeks old, and had not been human-socialised at all. The older a kitten gets without becoming socialised, the harder it can be to get them happy with people, but we had high hopes that Ace would get there and he headed off for some 1-2-1 time with a fosterer. Whilst Ace quickly adapted to life with the resident cats and dog, he simply wasnt interested in becoming friends with humans. He will happily take meat from fingers (hes a VERY food-oriented lad!) but that aside he really would rather not deal with us! He has spent the last few months living in harmony with his feline buddies in Pen 6. But with no prospect of a home on the horizon, we felt it was time to see if Ace would like a bit more freedom. He was transferred to our Open Pen area last week, together with a small group of his feral friends, and after some days in there with the doors closed, we opened the doors on Monday. Anyone who has a cat which goes out will know the nervous feeling when you let them out for the first time. Will they come back? Will they be ok? Were delighted to report that all cats given their freedom were seen yesterday - in fact they were quite literally circling the open pen waiting for the morning cleaning to be finished so that could nip back in for breakfast! And wee Ace? Well as you can see, he discovered there was another source of food just up the path…...
