Broadway-style, Dramatic Musicals, Musical Productions: What’s the Difference? BROADWAY STYLE MUSICALS Broadway-style musicals are built around a story line in which the characters sing songs which propel the action of the story. The songs reflect the characters feelings or intentions and advance the plot in some way. There is a mix of solos, duets, ensemble and full cast numbers- all of which serve the plot line of the musical. There is a sophistication to the lyrics in a Broadway-style song that you don’t typically find in other genres of music, such as perfect rhyme, the use of subtext, more complex harmonies, chord progressions and rhythms. Even the orchestrations have a particular sound and feel that identifies the music as “Broadway”. In many cases, orchestral rhythms (pizzicato strings, orchestral hits and punches, a 2 beat feel, etc) drive the music rather than a rhythm section alone. There are other indentifying traits of a Broadway-style musical, but these are a few of the more easily identifiable ones.
