Brookhaven Town Issues Fraud Alert Supervisor Ed Romaine warns Patchogue residents of letter falsely claiming to be from the Town Assessor’s office. Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine is warning residents about a scam by individuals looking to pose as Town workers to illegally enter private homes. Town officials were alerted on Friday of a letter sent to residents falsely claiming that employees from the Town Assessor’s office would be inspecting their property on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 between the hours of 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. as part of ”reassessments for the upcoming tax year.” No such reassessment or inspection is taking place in Brookhaven Town, town officials said. Suffolk County Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office have been notified of the incident, town officials said. “Whoever sent this fraudulent letter out will be prosecuted to the fullest extent to the law,” Romaine said. “We are asking the public to contact us at 451-TOWN if they have received any such letter, and to protect themselves and their family from those who fraudulently sent this letter. “ Any Brookhaven Town employee who is conducting official business will have proper identification, be traveling in an official vehicle, and will otherwise be able to identify themselves as acting in an official capacity.”
