Brothers, If you have been keeping up on sports news lately, you have likely heard of the cancellation of the football program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This has been a controversial decision by the University President (to say the least), and although he has assured band members that the UAB Marching Band will continue in finding other opportunities for performance. Realistically, we all know that this will be a monumental task to allow a marching band to continue in the absence of a football program. As a faculty member at UAB, I am doing what I can to help in reversing this decision, and have spoken to faculty in the Music Department to offer my support. There were many tears shed in the marching band when the announcement is made, and they are committed to helping keep these students involved in ensembles as they work to reverse the decision. Even if this decision is reversed, it will now take at least one year to re-assemble the football program, as many of the players and coaches have now committed to other schools. As you can imagine the next few years will be a difficult time for the chapters at UAB, as they try to support University ensembles, without their own most visible ensemble that they are able to use for recruiting new members and that brings many students together. Although there is little that this association as a whole can do, individual notes of support to the chapters would mean a lot these students, and let them know that they are on our minds at this trying time for their chapters and the music program. A few words in an e-mail would mean a lot to these students. The corresponding secretaries are Ashley Elliott, [email protected] (Eta Lambda, TBS), and Randall Westberry, [email protected] (Theta Theta, KKY).
